Tracy Reed’s Golf Setup Routine
This setup routine gets results so fast people are constantly amazed…

“Dear Tracy,
I am 56 years old and have been playing golf for about 37 years and play to a 4 handicap.
I have never improved so quickly as I have after two practice sessions utilizing your Dynamic Balance technique and setup!
I was averaging over 20 yards further with my tee shots and had career drives on two par fives by over 25 yards on each. I am a believer!”

Did you catch that at the end of the video? You want to make sure you’re feeling the balance in your feet in the instep between the balls and the heels. This is critical.

What follows is the text from Tracy’s original newsletter where he first spelled out this routine in detail:
The Root of All Evil (Swings)
By: Tracy Reed
Tour Professional players will tell you that more often than not, when they are having a bad day, the problem can be traced back to their setup routine.
If the hands, knee-bend, spine angle, or any other part of the setup is off by just a little bit, it will directly affect the golf swing.
When you are out on the golf course, you can’t see your setup, so if you want to know it is right, you have to learn to feel it, and know if it is correct, and if it’s not, how to fix it……that’s what this routine will do for you.
This golf grip and stance routine will automatically place you in a properly balanced stance for any golf club or any golf shot.
WARNING: You must pay attention to all of the details or this routine won’t help you.
This exercise LOOKS like most other golf instruction you will find, EXCEPT it has subtle differences.
Those differences have a lot to do with how your mind and body communicate.
The smart golfer who pays attention to the details of this exercise will see the differences and start to understand the subtle difference between instruction and instruction well communicated to the body.
When you understand the benefit from this setup routine, you will have what it takes to play scratch golf.
Over the years, I have tried and taught different routines to get into the golf stance, but I felt that they were incomplete and often still led to problems.
The routine I teach now took 10 years to develop and test so that it will work whether you are 6′9″ or 5′2″ and automatically adjusts to whatever club you are holding.
This routine is designed to allow golfers to find their own natural balanced stance without thought or doubt as to whether the stance is correct.
I have experimented with it by showing golfers at a driving range nothing more than the stance routine. In just about every case, when they properly performed this drill, their shot stayed on line with the intended target.
The Routine… Step-By-Step
First I step up to the ball with the right foot and ground the club head behind the ball. I keep 90% of my weight on the ball of my right foot and tilt my upper body until my arms are hanging straight down.
Having the weight on one foot while placing the club forces the upper body to find the correct forward bend.
Once you get the angle of waist bend/forward upper body forward tilt, it is very important to keep it while you place the rest of your body.
The next step is the most important:
Look down range at your target, and keeping the upper body angle intact, place your left foot and then your right so that your weight is distributed behind the balls of your feet with about 65% of the weight on the arch of your right foot.
Move back and forth, foot to foot, in very small steps until the feet feel comfortable with the weight in the arches.
This movement should be made without swinging the hips, but rather keeping the hips centered and rocking foot to foot as you pickup and place you feet. The feet should raise a few inches off of the ground each time.
The key here is to consciously feel the weight distribution under your feet.
DO NOT look back at the ball until your feet are positioned and you feel comfortable!!!
AGAIN, all placement of the feet is performed while you are looking down range at your target. You should be imagining in your mind where the ball is to “see” where to place your feet. This jump starts the visualization process and keeps you relaxed for the swing.
Since your right hand is lower on the grip, your right shoulder should be lower than your left (right handers). This is accomplished by tilting the spine slightly to the right. (See video above, Part 2)
The arms should hang straight down directly under the shoulders because this is where gravity will fight to take them during the downswing. If you allow them to follow their natural path, you can direct more energy to the club head. If you feel like your hands are too close to your body, (It should be about the width of your hand across your fingers away) it means you do not have the proper forward upper body tilt.
- When you start the club in the right position, you don’t have to fight the laws of physics during the swing and you then have more energy to direct to the club head.
- The reason you look away when you set your feet is so that you automatically get the right amount of knee bend and you automatically balance yourself.
- Setting the spine angle to the right sets up the right side pivot point which reduces the tendency to slide the hips as you take away the golf club which allows a coiling on the right side where all of the energy is stored in the backswing.
IMPORTANT: If you center yourself and find that the club is no longer behind the ball, STEP BACK and start over.
The tendency is to just reach a little bit to put the club behind the ball which will create an off-balance condition and defeat the whole purpose of the routine.
Lastly, ball position is handled by remembering only three important rules:
- The club head goes behind the ball.
- The grip/handle should be ahead of the ball (with exception of the Driver). To get more exact, the bottom of the grip should be just ahead of the ball. And
- Your hands should be lined up with your target side inner thigh. In that position, the club face should be lined up to the intended target line. If you get the setup and the club face lined up properly, the ball should fly on line.
This routine should help you to start hitting the ball more consistently, no matter what pattern your shots have. The pattern can be corrected, once you have a consistent shot.

Hi Tracy andy Kory,
I really appreaciate when you send new instructions and updates cause it shows you care and not only a one time deal. I’m working on my swing while watching the dvd over and over and always find something that’s making my swing better and consistent. Last Saturday on several drives I was amazed at the distance I’m driving the ball. The first good one, I couldn’t find my ball until I looked at a ball 100 yards past my regular distance. The last thing I found watching the dvd was letting my arms hang down while addressing the ball. I didn’t realize that I reached out and what do you know you send a video of Sergio doing the same thing. Before I hardly used my 4 iron because it never went the correct distance and most times off line. The hole I hit my driver 100 yards past, I hit my 4 iron on the green and that’s a long par 5. On another par 3 - 170 yards into the wind, I thought it was a perfect shot but I found my ball 30 yards over the green. I’ll figure it out but let me tell you I’m very happy and surprised with the extra distance. I still got a long way to go, the golf swing is full of surprises. Thanks guys!
Aloha,
Andy Tasaka
Hi Andy,
Mahalo for writing, what a great story!
It always makes us feel good to read stories like yours. Congratulations on your success with the program.
Golf is full of surprises, like you said, and every step you take in the right direction gives you a lifetime of results. You’ll be hitting longer drives now until you’re too old to hold a club (may that day be a looooong way off).
Keep us posted on your progress.
Regards,
Kory
PS - I was in Oahu last week, what Island are you on? I’m trying to convince Tracy we need to do a golf retreat in Hawa’ii for a few days this winter. The problem is he’s in Forida and not feeling the same pain we are up here in the Northwest :)
About 20 years ago, I sustained a head injury (I hit myself in the head with my own golf ball-a skulled 8-iron into a rock less than 10 feet away) This injury affected my balance (physical ,not mental-I think) So I keep my balance through my eyes rather than through the vestibular channels in the ears.
So , the upshot of all of this is– can a system that is based on dynamic balance be adapted to my particular physical situation?
Hi Tom, thanks for writing.
The balance system we’re using for the golf swing comes from being aware of the pressure at the bottom of your feet to make sure you are in balance before and during your swing.
Fundamentally, if you start in balance, your body will fight to keep you in balance and work to bring the club back to the ball square.
As long as you can get in touch with the sensations in your feet, and recognize when your weight is positioned on the insides of your feet between the ball and the heel of your foot, you should be able to use this system.
Question: with your eyes closed, are you able to stand or walk at all without falling over?
I suggest trying the steps outlined in the videos above and see what happens. Look away towards the target while you set your feet and notice where you feel the pressure in your feet.
Looking away forces you to become aware of the bottom of your feet and trains you to get in touch with this before each swing.
Watch the free videos a few times, try it out on the range and let me know what happens.
Regards,
Kory
I very much enjoyed the videos and instruction. I am a 51 yr. old with a passion for the game and to improve. I am going to be more concious of my balance and start my stance as you have taught here. I have been striking the ball fairly well here as of late but still have a lot of improvement yet. I believe this lessons will help me to get to my goal of shooting mid-upper 70″s. I enjoy watching videos of other golfers and their swings that helps me to groove mine. I would like to see Steve Striker, or Jim Furick, good short game players. Thank you so much for your instruction and time for the grand ole game.
Hi Tracy
I cannot wait to try this new setup routine. It makes so much sense
thanks
Dave
Tracy,
I received your system DVD’s last week. They came about 10 days after I downloaded your tremendous instructional manuals. While waiting for the DVD’s I read the manual and focused on the set-up. Much to my surprise, I noticed immediate improvement. I probably reduced my miscues by 80-90%. I never had a routine before! I’m an 18 hcp. Before Tracy, I had some good shots, but many horrible ones. The ratio is changing for the better. Overall, this is the best investment I ever made.
A few inconsistencies - page 83 shows golf placing his feet together in setup before placing them in their final position. I did not notice this move on the DVD’s. In the setup part of DVD 1 Tracy actually places his feet in position as he looks at the ball. After reading how important the “little things” are, these things brought about some confusion on my part.
One “complaint” is that the manual is very wordy and the video is a bit too short. Watching the transition video - I still am a bit confused. Some type of drill to nail this down would help a great deal. The transition audio and transcript are great. The recommendation that hands should be kept low, gave me immediate improvement.
Short game?
I would hope that an even more comprehensive DVD is in the works.
Hi Guys
The information in these lessons is fantastic. Just the simple set up information has explained some of my off-line shots. I look forward to seeing more of these, particularly if you intend to send us one on the take away. I seem to have trouble with my 3 wood on this more than other clubs.
Great info.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
John B
Dear Tracy:
I can see the video but do not have any sound. yes, my audio is turned up on my computer.
I really enjiyed your analysis of Tiger’s swing.
Keep up the good work.
Gordon Thomas
Tracy,
Thanks again for developing your system. I have been going over the manual for about two weeks and the DVD’s for about one week. As I’ve said in a previous post, my misses have dropped dramatically, But I do have a few more questions.
After taking a grip, the club is in line with my left leg, but when I tilt forward to ground the club where is it? It seems to me that it has moved in front of my right foot. I need some clarification.
Also, when I tilt away from the target to set the rear hip, what happens to the hips when I tilt away? It seems as if they move towards the target. Is this so?
Hi,
I am 50 years old, and I have been playing golf off and on for about twenty years. I developed quite a few bad habits when I initially started playing, and as a result, I have been trying to find a consistent swing ever since. I have been to Leadbetter’s academy in the past and also to some other respected instructors. More recently, I have been working with someone who utilizes video and also recommended that I change my swing to the one plane Hardy technique. I just returned from Florida where I spent a few weeks working, and I just am not sure what is right or wrong anymore. I have always been a good athlete, and I know that I am capable of playing a lot better than I have to date. I am about a 14 handicap, but I really believe a single digit handicap is realistic. It just seems like there are so many ideas out there on how to swing that it really is difficult to know which direction to go and who to listen to. I am determined to do whatever it takes to play to my FULL potential, and I really believe that one needs to learn how to diagnois there own swing at some point, but how does one know what that is with all the instruction and different ideas out there. I would appreciate any insight you can give me.
Thank you,
Michael Mellom
Hi Tracy,
I am very keen to buy ur cd´s but i live in Spain and would like to know if u can send them here.
I am very impressed even with the few tips of set up u gave on the website and just trying that made a tremendous difference in my game.
I cant see anywhere ur e-mail address so i hope u get to see this soon before ur special offer of $127 expires.
Thanks
Kas
Very enlightening.
as most instructers say the same thing I cannot see anything new,
the main problem is , NO one in my opinion can think of all the things you suggest prior to hitting the shot,
golf is not easy as you know but to fill the head with another 6 or more things to do is in my opinion crazy,
I have purchased a system from a guy in NY, he has rteally found the key, only one thing to do, do it properly the way he suggests and you are on top on the game, total cost US$6
would guarantee this system to hald your handicap
regards
Neil,
Great point. Consciously, the mind cannot remember more than one item at one time. But have you ever heard the expression, “A picture is worth a thousand words?”
The trick is to commit the routines to visual memory. Best part is, the routines also teach how to do that and if you pay close attention, they also jump-start the process for you. Yes, it’s almost sneaky how I have golfers who thought they could never visualize anything visualizing whole routines in a matter of a few hours.
Balance and visualization are also the keys to focus, the key ingredient top athletes must master to find the zone during competition. Focus is that place where you act without conscious thought and aren’t sure why. The why is simple if you understand how the brain works. The short answer is that in the zone you think visually in the subconscious. Much the same reason it’s easier to sit through a two-hour movie than it is to read the same book. With the book, all thoughts pass through the conscious whereas the movie is already in form of pictures, which is how the subconscious thinks.
I have been reading “The Natural Golf Swing” by G Knudson and balance is his mantra also. It is great that you teach that.
Tracy,
Firstly, great videos. An easy to use routine to find your balance is something i have been looking for in my game so i found these videos really useful.
There is one burning question i need to ask though. On my local course you are very rarely on a level lie. For example, the ball is often below the level of your feet and i feel that i am out of balance thoughout the swing and probably reaching for the ball too.
Are there any alterations i should be making to this balance routine to compensate for the various lies you may encounter on the course.
Regards
Russ
I have followed your set up routine, and after 57 years playing the Game, ( I am 72 years )I have never felt so comfortable addressing the ball!
Distance and accuracy have improved and have cut my handicap to 15. Not as good as when I was in my prime, but it has dropped by 3 strokes, and I am enjoying the game more.
I did enjoy your swing analysis of Tiger and Sergio. Keep it coming!
Graeme
Hi Tracy , Kory
I watched the videos of your setup so simple and straight forward and makes good sense all I have to do is aply it and I am sure that the shots will go a lot better.
The videos are a great teacher and I hope that I may be able to see more of them.
Do you use the same setup routine for drives as well.
Regards
David
hi tracy i have been working on a new golfing idea which is easy to use and gives lots of feed back .
But i feel i am missing out or not able to put the correct details down, so every one could understand ,after reading your instruction and your knowledge of the game, may be you could help and get involved with a dvd .
If you would like more info please give me a call on 0034666365014
many thanks alan
Hi Tracy,
Found your video and presentation very interesting, however have you come across or heard of Dr Ralph Mann or his book ‘Swing like a Pro’ which has some very good stuff, not theory, but actual swing dynamics of some of the world’s top pro’s and what they actually do out ‘on tour’ earning a living? This really is an eye-opener and shows up some of the teaching methods and theories as incorrect, even when taught by those self-same pro’s. In other words sometimes even the pro’s don’t actually do what they say/think they do.
Regards
Jim
Tracy,
You videos are helping me remember and reinforce golf lessons I had several years ago. The Colbert-Ballard system is very similar but your explanations are much better. I still use the swing connector during practice to keep my left arm connected to my chest.
Thank you,
John
Hi Tracy
Have been playing a lot of golf (3 rounds a week) and for the past 3 months
was showing good consistency and hitting them well. On one occasion I was
hitting my drives so long I was finding myself having personal bests on almost
every fairway. I was amazed and thought it was the new ball I was using.
However, the next week, I was confused and puzzled - I had lost 30 - 50
metres off my drive and was struggling.
I believe that the better I played the more confidently I addressed and hit the ball (relaxed and loose), and when I didn’t I became tense and lost distance.
I realise this is a common problem for most golfers, but have you any tips on
how to loosen up and be more confident? Some days I am not able to hit any
balls on the range before teeing of - not ideal, but early am tee times don’t help.
Jan
You are sure to improve my swing a great deal.
I have never seen anything like this before.
Tony.
THANKS. YOUR VIDEO’S ARE DEFINITELY THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN. SIMPLE AND CONCISE .
Tracy
I am a golfer for 25 years and in the beginning I was skeptical about your set-up routine. So today I went to the driving range and tried it. I couldn’t believe it, I was striking the ball pure and my misses were not too far off from center. But more importantly I used to “chicken wing” my follow through but because of my hand position at address and by keeping my balance centered on the arches of my foot, the chicken wing disappeared.
Definitely the best tip I’ve had ever!!
Regards
Jing
I have been to 3 golf schools and have taken a number of golf lessons. I have been told I slide forward on my downswing and I pull the ball , but nobody has been able to explain how to correct these faults because they never explained properly how to set-up to the ball and keep in balance.
Thank you for explaining the proper fundamentals.
Regards,
Fred
Hi,
I’ve watched your videos and will try the set up asap. you mentioned about the grip technique in the set up video. how does the grip work? i watched all your videos but there was no explaination aout the grip. would you please let me know what i should do about the grip? thank you.
linh
Hi Tracy, employed your set up routine in my last game and felt that I was striking the ball more consistently and a little more accurate than before, although scoring was not any better than previous rounds this should come with practice in using this technique( i even did it while putting).the stance also put me closer to the one plane swing which is my goal as I feel am more upright at impact which might equate to more distance. Mike
Hi Tracy,
I am 64 years of age with a playing handicap of 10 which has gone up from 6 in the past 15 years. I have had numerous lessons to try and get back into single figures with no success. Pros and playing partners always comment on how good my swing looks but my scores tell a different storey. In practice I concern myself with so many swing thoughts on taking the club back on plane and getting into the correct position at impact that I have become so tense I can hardly swing freely.
I am delighted by your instruction, it makes so much sense. I am confident it will clear my mind and make my practice much more beneficial.
Thank you very much.
Michael
Hi Tracy,
First of all I would like to thank you and your team for all this valuable information that you have provided. I have had a good few games implementing your grip and setup routine. It has diffinitely improved my ball stricking and the flight which makes it so more pleasurable.
I must mention that although I can feel the difference in my game with a lot of concentration I still feel as if I am faultering to my old habits during my swing. Basically what I’m saying is that I probably hit the ball with my hands in the centre of my body which I did all my golfing life and not that the hands be more in front of the ball with my irons. Thats why I am reasonably good with my driver and 3 wood but my iron are always short.
I am working on this and know it will take time and lots of practice.
Thanks again.
Trevor
Tracy, After using your set up routine the past three rounds on Par 72 courses all three different, I’ve been able to break into the 70’s for the first time this year……my last three rounds were 78-79-77 Thanks to your program. Golf is a lot more fun! Regards, Pete Maker Erie,PA
Hey Tracy and Kory, I just tried your set up routine yesterday with fantastic results. I started first without a ball but couldn’t wait to see how well it would work. I hit 70 range balls and maybe five were bad. But what I mean by that is that those five just didn’t go as long or as straight as the other 60. They would have still been playable had I been on a course, as a matter of fact I’ve had to play some pretty bad shots in the past. They were a result of me not fully following your instructions. I’ve never really had a set up routine before and this sure does take the guess work out of the golf swing! My big problem now is adjusting to the new distances I’m getting from my clubs. My pitching wedge was good for 100-110 yards, now when I hit it correctly it’s giving me about 140! dead straight down the middle. I’m playing golf on Friday with my golf buddy and I told him about your system before I went to the range. Well I called him when I got back and said ” be afraid, be very afraid”. He has always beaten me and sometimes by 10 or more strokes but I’m confident that with your system I’m gonna give him a run for his money! My only concern is that I may over drive some of the greens until I get used to the new distances!
Thanks again for your amazing system and insights,
Clint
Looking forward to trying out this new setup. I am excited about this approach to playing better golf. I will let you know what happen when I get the chance to try this out. Thanks
Hi Tracy: Just watched your video on Sergio’s swing; Plane and Balance. You explained plane better then I have ever heard it before. As far as balance is concerned most golfers really don’t understand how important it is. I haven’t been able to play for several months due to an injury;however as soon as I can I can’t wait to try your ideas out on the golf course. I have been playing golf for forty-nine years and I am still learning keep up the great work….Thanks Bud Loughran
tracy, are you still in business?
Of course I am. I am very busy; why do you ask?
Very basic but definitely something I can review and practice. I have been doing things as I am used to without checking on the stance and how I set up to the target. I will go to the driving range and give this a go. I will give you my next comment then. Am sure I will see what benefits I get and definitely I should get more distance and more solid shots going in the right direction.
Thanks.
When you wrote, “weight is distributed behind the balls of your feet with about 65% of the weight on the arch of your right foot.”
Is this because after you set up, you tilt to the right?
Because I thought the weight was EVENLY distributed between the heel and balls of the foot, on BOTH feet.
Thanks for a great video and lesson.
Miguel, Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin

I just watched you video on Sergio. I’m going to try working on my balance. There are way too many scams I’ve seen on other web sites just trying to get people’s $$$ that don’t really help at all!
Yours seems to be the most sincere one I’ve come across so far.
I set up a folder that is full of all the golf info I’ve come across on the web.
I’m going to look at yours in more depth.
Briefly can you tell me other than the swing does your course go more into detail on other aspects of the game?
Thanks, Mark
Tracy,
I have purchased your DVD (from Japan!) and have watched it a number of times. Great DVD and very clear.
One thing that I am still a little stuck is on the start of the backswing. When you move your left arm (arm pit) back, at the same time, you say “to move the right shoulder back” do you feel like you are moving your right arm pit back or the right shoulder itself. I get a different feeling depending on where I have my mind set, shoulder, arm pit or shoulder blade.
I would really appreciate if you can pinpoint the exact feeling.
Thank you and best regards
Hiro Kobayashi
Hiro,
The armpit and shoulder should move back directly behind you (perpendicular to the target line) together with the turning of the body, so if they are moving as one unit, visualizing either one should work. What I’m trying to prevent with this point is any lateral movement (along the target line) in the upper body before the backswing turn. Lateral movement will move the hips out of place and cause the backswing to lock in the hips before the full turn is made, which would cause disconnection and a partial arm swing that would throw of timing and reduce power.
Good question.
Tracy
dear tracy i have your tape , i have studied it all winter, overall i love it and for 2 straight weeks this year i could not do any thing wrong but my swing has left me and i know it has to do with my triangle and connection to the chest can you send me some tips on exactly where the elbows are on your body when setting up .is there a page in your book with this info and how to keep the conection to the left shoulder maybe some drills
This certainly simplifies things and hopefully will add some more consistent shots.
Hi Folks,
I like the one piece plane idea. However I hae noticed that when I have used this idea my ball has a fade instead of the nice draw I had, and I lose some distance. Is this normal or is there something I am missing or not doing?

[…] focus on the feel of getting your balance; I still feel the need to peek at my ball as I set up. (take a moment and watch these two short vids from Tracy) With this completed you have just given yourself about an 80% chance of having a perfect shot, […]
Personally I think the fade is a much more consistant and reliable shot. But that aside if it is a pull fade (ball starts slightly left and comes back) move the ball back a little in your setup. If it starts on target and moves right maybe strenthen your grip a little. Also, if your swing plane has become more upright you may need to adjust the lie settings of your clubs (toe side of the divot deeper than the heel side). Just a guess.
Kevin
Tracy:
I bought your book and video package and I am having a serious problem. I am now hitting the ball thin. This, of course is not evident with the driver as it is teed up. Any suggestion how to fix this siuation?
Wow, I watched your video’s on youtube yesterday, early morning and I can’t believe how I hit the ball a couple of hours later at the course. My first drive and this was without any practice was 235yds down the middle. Normally I hit around 200. Some of my irons were fantastic, so crisp and clean and perfectly on line. However, I did have a problem hitting some very thin. I’m sure that with practice , I’ll correct the problem. Thank you and I want to order the video’s.
Dynamic Balance is for real. A way to “feel” the balance, or lack of it, comes from my college psychiatry course about 100 years ago. Put yourself in a mildly unbalance position - leaning forward as an example - and close your eyes. The body’s balance mechanism, your internal senses, will gently pull you back into a balanced position. During practice seesions I will hold certain positions in my set up, back swing and follow through, close my eyes and be brought back to a well balanced postion. You can learn how good balance feels. As you point out about good balance - don’t fight it - use it.
Many thanks for a great instruction book and DVD. I hope to get them back from my grandson someday soon.
hey tracy i have your videos do you have any material on the driver its giving me a lot of trouble is it the same set up , height of tee etc etc thanks ed mckallen
tracy reed,
i’m 75 yrs and have been playing golf for about 10 yr.
took a lesson once for about a half hour and when i was throug
i new then that it was a waste of time with that gentleman.
i have been working on my own and not doing to bad.
your breakdown of tigers swing really did wonders for me.
i went out the next day and i could only remember about
half of what i read and i picked up about 20 yd off the tee. i went
from about 190 - 200 up to 220 -230 consistant. i have sky
caddy to use for a check. my problem is with the tranition but i
ame working on that and with the ease that you make i know that
i will be able in about one session.

Thank you for sending your newsletter. From all I have seen on the computer about Tracy Reed’s methods I am very much looking forward to trying these next time I go on the golf course, or, at least the points I can REMEMBER! Is there a Tracy Reed manual, either paperback or hardback available to purchase in the UK? If there is, it would mean I could flip to the relevant section immediately (of whatever I had forgotten this time) without having to boot-up the computer, try to find the area etc.
